In a heartwarming display of community spirit, a local family has raised nearly $13,000.00 for pediatrics cancer care through a unique pumpkin fundraiser called 'Jack O’Lanterns' , inspired by the courageous battle of a young boy named Jack Gretsinger. Jack who was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia at just three years old, and recently just celebrated his fourth birthday while undergoing treatment.
Jack's aunt, Kelly Gretsinger, spearheaded the initiative after planting a variety of pumpkins in spring, hoping to share them with family and friends. As fall approached, she had an abundance of colourful pumpkins and decided to turn the surplus of pumpkins into an opportunity to support cancer care.
"I initially thought raising $1,000 would be incredible, but the community's response has blown us away. We're grateful for the support, and the funds will directly impact Jack and other children like him."
The funds raised will be allocated to pediatrics units in Manitoba, ensuring that local children receive essential support during their treatments. Kelly expressed her gratitude for the medical staff who have provided care and comfort for Jack during this challenging time.
"He loves the toy room at the cancer care facility and is always asking when he can go back."
Jack's family has rallied around him, supported by a network of friends and community members. His sister, Lily, has also felt the impact of the situation, with school staff and classmates coming together to support the family during Jack's treatment.
"They've created a bear for Jack's spot in Nursery school until he can return," she shared, highlighting the kindness of their community.
The fundraiser gained momentum quickly, with Kelly’s efforts further amplified by Jack’s other aunt, Jennifer, who donated an additional 50 pumpkins. Local residents Sam and Kyle Nichol of Autumn Adventures MB organized a Jack-O'-Lantern carving contest, contributing to the fundraising efforts.

"It's about creating a positive impact locally, and we couldn't have done it without the incredible support from our community."
As Jack continues to show resilience through his treatment, the love and support from those around him have proven to be a source of strength for his family. The success of the pumpkin fundraiser is a testament to the community's unwavering spirit and dedication to helping one of their own.
The 'Jack O’Lanterns' fundraiser in honour of Jack will be live for another week and 100% of the proceeds will stay in Manitoba and directly support kids fighting cancer.
