India faces Ireland in its T20 World Cup 2024 campaign opener in New York.

India faces Ireland in its T20 World Cup 2024 campaign opener in New York.

Hello and welcome to Sportstar’s HIGHLIGHTS of the India vs Ireland T20 World Cup Group A match being played at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

Rohit Sharma, India captain

“Yeah, just a little sore (the arm). I said it at the toss as well. Quite unsure of what to expect from the pitch. Not aware on what it is to play like on a pitch that’s five months old. I don’t think the wicket settled down even when we batted second. There was enough for the bowlers.”

Paul Stirling, Ireland captain

“Toss played a crucial part. We needed to put a bit of pressure back on the Indian bowlers. They didn’t really miss that often. Their groupings and lengths were outstanding. Any time in the middle is crucial for us. We’ll be back here for a couple of days. Will give it a good crack against Canada.”

Player-of-the-match: Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah is named the Player-of-the-Match for his excellent bowling performance of 3-1-6-2. He started off with a maiden over and the Irish batters could never find a way around him.

Bumrah: “Coming from India, with the ball seaming around, I wouldn’t complain when there’s help for bowlers. In this format, you have to adapt to the conditions, you have to be proactive. Trying to stick to the plans and trying to go back to what has worked for me. You always want to cover all the bases in these conditions. You got to be prepared, very happy with the outing today.”

IND 91/2 in 12 overs

Shivam Dube comes in next. Two dot balls to end the over.

OUT! Suryakumar goes for the slop sweep but this goes high and not far and a good catch at deep midwicket.

Suryakumar Yadav c Dockrell b White 2 (4b)

FOUR! Slashed over extra-cover by Pant and he finds the boundary. He steps out next ball and chips this to long-off for a single.

White into the attack. Finally an over of spin in this innings. Flicked away behind square-leg by Suryakumar for a single.

IND 85/1 in 11 overs

Suryakumar shuffles across his stumps and looks to bring out his trademark flick over backward square-leg but misses. Dabbed to third-man for a single by Suryakumar to end the over.

SIX! Stand and deliver. Picked up from a length by Pant and pulled over the square-leg boundary for a maximum.

This is going down leg-side and called wide. This one is also darting into Pant, keeps slightly low and Pant puts it away on leg-side awkwardly.

And now Pant has been hit on the elbow as he misses this flick on leg-side. The physio is out to have a look at him. He looks okay to continue. Definitely, not the safest of pitches for batters this one.

And Rohit has retired hurt on 52. He points to his shoulder as he walks off the field. In comes Suryakumar Yadav.

Rohit Sharma retired hurt 52 (37b 4x4 3x6)

IND 76/1 in 10 overs

Over-pitched again, Rohit looks to go big outside off but ends up slicing it high in the air. Collects a couple of runs. Flicked off the pads to deep midwicket for another couple by Rohit.

Adair comes back. India needs 33 runs to win from 11 overs at 3 RPO. Going down leg-side and Adair starts off with a wide. Bouncer and Pant first looks to ramp it and then pulls his head out of the way. Very full, and Pant drills this to long-on but only gets a single.

IND 64/1 in 9 overs

Rohit now back away outside leg-stump, but the bowler follows him and Rohit is cramped for room.

SIX! Short, and this is right up Rohit’s alley. Pulled away for a maximum over deep square-leg. SIX! Short again and this is dispatched over fine-leg for back-to-back maximums.

Little again, for his third over. Rohit goes for a lap shot and the ball seems to have gone off his arm and to the point fielder. Ireland goes up for the review. Clearly that came off Rohit’s shoulder and Ireland loses the review.

IND 52/1 in 8 overs

McCarthy again. Flicked off the pads by Rohit for a single. Pulled away by Pant through square-leg for one more. Rohit swivels and pulls this to deep fine-leg for another single. Inventive from Pant. He shuffles across and pulls this behind the keeper. It goes up high in the air but also far enough from the keeper for a couple of runs. FOUR! Pulled away down the ground this time and this one trickles to the boundary. Dot ball to end the over.

IND 43/1 in 7 overs

Beaten! Angling away from Pant, who can’t make any connection as he looks to dab this behind point. Width outside off and slashed away to deep point for a couple to end the over.

Rohit steps out now to heave this on leg-side but misses the ball just misses his outside edge. Short, and Rohit puts it away for a single at fine-leg.

T20 World Cup 2024: Rohit is just the third batter after Virat Kohli and Babar Azam to score 4000 runs in T20 internationals.

IND 39/1 in 6 overs

FOUR! Very full outside off and Rohit slices this over point and finds the boundary. That’s also 4000 runs in T20Is for Rohit Sharma. He is beaten with a back-of-a-length delivery that angles away outside off. End of over.

No timing again and Rohit steals a single as the ball goes off the inside edge and towards mid-on. Flicked off the pads by Pant for one more.

Little comes back for his second over. The ball moves away and beats Rohit’s drive outside off. This is angling away outside off and Rohit lets the ball go. India in no hurry to chase this down.

IND 33/1 in 5 overs

Adair bowls his third over. Rohit gets an outside edge to deep third and collects a single. Pushed off the pads by Pant to mid-on for one more. Another outside edge to deep third for Rohit and another single. A dot ball after three consecutive singles. Full, swung away by Pant but only as far as the fielder at mid-on. Two dots in a row now. Going down leg-side, Pant misses the sweep and called wide. Another swing and a miss outside off to end the over.

IND 29/1 in 4 overs

Pant swings for the hills on the leg-side, misses and that’s the over.

Rohit pulls this almost into the hands of the mid-on fielder and then takes a very risky single and just scampers to the non-striker’s end.

Here comes McCarthy with the ball. Rohit eases this to deep third with soft hands for a single. Driven by Pant to cover-point for one more next ball. Some extra bounce on this occasion and Rohit guides this to the slip cordon.

IND 26/1 in 3 overs

FOUR! This is hammered over Rohit’s head and all the way to the long-on boundary to end the over.

Interesting! Rishabh Pant is in at No. 3. He is greeted with a yorker, which he digs out.

OUT! Kohli is gone, caught at third-man. He stepped out looking to clear the in-field on the off-side but got an outside edge that flew straight into the hands of deep third.

Virat Kohli c White b Mark Adair 1 (5b)

Kohli steps out to slash this on the off-side and misses as Adair continues. Beaten! Shapes in now and beats Kohli’s inside edge. Three dot balls in a row now.

IND 22/0 in 2 overs

FOUR! Rohit gets lucky again. This is pitched wide outside off and he reaches out for it and gets an inside edge that runs away past the wicketkeeper for a boundary. SIX! Finally a convincing hit from the skipper! Sits up perfectly and Rohit with a pick-up pull to launch this over the long-on boundary for the first maximum of the innings.

Full on the stumps and defended awkwardly by Rohit on the off-side. This is going down leg-side again and called wide. Second one of the over by Little.

Clipped off the pads by Rohit for a couple as Little bowls too straight again. On the pads again but Rohit misses the whip and the ball goes off the pads and to the wicketkeeper.

Josh Little to Kohli now. Full and guided behind point for a single by Kohli. Shaping away outside leg and called wide.

IND 7/0 in 1 over

FOUR! Burst through the hands of second slip and that runs away for a boundary. Lucky start for India.

On the pads and flicked away for a couple by Rohit. First runs off the bat for India. Inside edge to short fine-leg on this occasion. Not the most convincing of starts for India either.

This is defended back to the bowler by Rohit with a very straight bat. Beaten! Shapes back into Rohit, who steps out and looks to lift this on the off-side but misses.

Ind vs Ire - Figure 6

Rohit will take strike. Two slips in place. Rohit slashes outside off and misses as the ball jags away off the pitch. Called wide by the umpire. Back of a length just outside off again and punched to point by Rohit.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will get the innings underway for India. Mark Adair will bowl the first over. Will India be in a hurry to chase this down or will it take its time? We’ll find out soon.

Hardik Pandya after 3/27 in 4 overs

Always special to play for the country, always good to play for pride. I have been able to contribute in World Cups, god has been kind. That was an outstanding effort by Axar Patel. Those are the catches when you let your hand-eye co-ordination let in. I really liked the first wicket. I don’t hit the stumps often as I usually bowl short of a length. I needed to be fuller than back of a length today. On this kind of surface, you need to be disciplined and hit the right areas. It’s always fantastic to see the crowd. We Indians are everywhere, we rule the world, good to have their support.

IRE 96 all out in 16 overs

Arshdeep Singh comes back in the attack. Arshdeep comes from over the wicket to Delany, FOUR! Short from Arshdeep and Delany pounces on it with a flat bat slap for a boundary down the ground. Arshdeep to Delany, DROPPED! Jadeja misses a tough chance. Arshdeep to Delany, SIX! Wonderful shot from Delany who brings out a confident pull for a six over deep mid-wicket. Arshdeep to Delany, FOUR! This time a lucky edge gives a four to Delany. Arshdeep bowls a NO BALL. Arshdeep to White, OUT! Delany has been RUN OUT as his rearguard effort comes to an end now. Ireland managed 96 in 16 overs.

The last man Benjamin White has come in the middle. He places the full ball towards third man for a single to start his innings. A couple of single and a four give Ireland six from this over.

IRE 73/8 in 14 overs

Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack for the first time today. He replaces Axar Patel. Jadeja to Little, FOUR! This is brilliant and fearless from Little who is making sure to have something on the board to fight for while bowling. A short ball in the middle and Little times his reverse sweep well to get a boundary at the backward point. Three singles add a total of seven off this over.

IRE 66/8 in 13 overs

Hardik to finish his quota now. Hardik to Gareth Delany, SIX! A cracking shot from Delany who starts the over with a maximum. Short and in the slot for the batter, who heaves it towards deep square leg. Hardik to Little, FOUR! Little joins the party. He shuffles to get some room and slams the short ball over the bowler for a boundary. 14 off Hardik’s last over. He ends his spell with figures of 4-1-27-3.

IRE 52/8 in 12 overs

So spin for the first time today as Axar Patel comes into the attack in place of Siraj. a single in the first delivery takes Ireland to 50. Axar to McCarthy, OUT! Ireland is eight down now! Axar dives on his right to complete a brilliant catch off his own bowling.

IRE 46/6 in 10 overs

Mohammed Siraj comes back into the attack. Siraj to Dockrell, DROPPED! A difficult chance for Rohit at mid-off, he lept in the air on the right for a one-handed catch attempt but the ball went past him to give a couple of runs to Dockrell. Sira to Dockrell, OUT! This time Dockrell has to depart. He holes out to Bumrah at mid-on.

He shapes in the ball and gets an outside edge, carried to keeper Pant. Ireland is now five down under 50!

IRE 36/4 in 8 overs

Tucker b Hardik Pandya 10(13)

In comes Curtis Campher at number five. Hardik to Campher, FOUR! Ah, beautiful shot, just glance the ball on the leg for a boundary to get off the mark.

IRE 26/2 in in 6 overs

A first change in the attack. Jasprit Bumrah comes in place Siraj. A brilliant start from Bumrah who kept Tector in a leech and ended up bowling a maiden.

IRE 26/2 in 5 overs

Arshdeep Singh with his third over. FIVE WIDES! Arshdeep errs in length and bowls an inswinger which races past the keeper for extras. He is finding it difficult to control his line in this over as he bowled three more wides to wreck his economical spell. Arshdeep to Tucker, FOUR! Full and on the offside, Tucker leans down and drives it over cover to end the over with a boundary.

IRE 13/2 in 4 overs

IRE 9/2 in 3 overs

Arshdeep continues. Arshdeep to Stirling, OUT! He gets the big fish in skipper Stirling! A good length delivery in the middle, lures Stirling to play a big hit but he miscues it big time, the ball goes high up in the air, only to be landed safely in Pant’s gloves.

Stirling c Pant b Arshdeep Singh 2(6)
