Ilya Mikheyev’s time in Vancouver is up.

The Vancouver Canucks traded Mikheyev and his $4.75 million cap hit to the Chicago Blackhawks Wednesday evening, a trade that agent Dan Milstein helped broker.

Mikheyev, 29, had a no-trade clause in his contract. Milstein was authorized last week to find a trade for his client.

The Canucks have announced the deal also includes a 2027 second round pick plus the rights to pending UFA winger Sam Lafferty shipped to the Windy City, with a 2027 fourth-round pick going the other way to Vancouver.

The Canucks will also retain 15 per cent of Mikheyev’s salary.

Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announces that the #Canucks have acquired a 4th round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Ilya Mikheyev, Sam Lafferty, and a 2nd round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft. Mikheyev notched 59 points (24G, 35A) in 124 games over two seasons as a Canuck, but struggled last season with one goal in his last 60 games played.

Trading Mikheyev would allow the Canucks to have more flexibility to fill out their roster, either by re-signing boisterous blueliner Nikita Zadorov, who has expressed interest in re-signing in Vancouver, but apparently for more than the Canucks have offered to date, or adding a high-profile free agent like Jake Guentzel.

Zadorov has the same agent as Mikheyev, so one supposes that a condition for helping the Canucks out of their Mikheyev cap jam would be for Milstein to ask the Canucks to make a new contract offer that would please his client, but in the end his primary purpose here was to find Mikheyev a new team to play for.

The Canucks are also expected to be among the final suitors to sign Guentzel, who the Canucks’ management team knows well from their days together in Pittsburgh.

But Guentzel signing in Vancouver is far from a certainty, with the Canucks’ ability to match the top offers out there — or even stomach paying such a price over a long term, for a winger who will soon be 30 — in question.
