New Storm Hits Jamaica; Could Form Hurricane Sara

Here we go again.

Another tropical storm is forming in the ultra-warm waters of the Caribbean, and experts say it could hit Cancun, Florida or Cuba next week.

The National Hurricane Center on the morning of 13NOV said there’s a 90% chance of a tropical depression forming in the next 48 hours.

“A broad area of low pressure over the central Caribbean Sea continues to produce a large area of showers and thunderstorms,” the center said. “Environmental conditions are conducive for development, and a tropical depression is likely to form within the next couple of days while the system moves slowly westward into the western Caribbean
Sea.

Afterward, further development is likely while the disturbance meanders over the western Caribbean Sea through the weekend. The system is expected to turn slowly northwestward by early next week. Interests across the western and northwestern Caribbean Sea should monitor the progress of this system. Regardless of development, heavy rains are expected over Jamaica during the next day or so.”

If the system does indeed strengthen into a storm, it will become Sara, the 18th named storm of the season.

Writing on X/Twitter, weather forecaster Bryan Norcross said Tropical Storm Sara will likely form in a few days, and that there’s a “decent chance of Hurricane Sara (forming) by early next week.

Experts say the path of the storm is unclear. Sara could hit Cancun and the Riviera Maya in a few days, or perhaps swing north towards western Cuba, which has been hit by Hurricane Rafael earlier this month. Some forecasters are warning of another big storm for the Gulf Coast of Florida, which was damaged by both Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton this fall.
