Just in time for fall, TV’s coziest romance is back. All eight episodes of Heartstopper season three are now available to stream on Netflix—and if you’re like me, you might already be caught up with Nick, Charlie, and the rest of the gang (and ready to binge the new episodes all over again). Now the question remains: Will there be a season four?

Right now, Heartstopper hasn’t been officially renewed for another installment, but fear not, because if the successful ratings and extremely good reviews are any indication, a confirmation is likely not far off.

Not to mention, Alice Oseman, who writes the source material and acts as creator and consultant on the show, is currently in the process of releasing her final Heartstopper chapters. This only means that there’s ripe new material for another season.

When the first season came out in April 2022, it was only a month later that Netflix renewed it for two more series, which were released in August 2023 and October 2024, respectively.

If history is any indication, season four of Heartstopper will follow the pattern of the first three seasons and contain a total of eight episodes. However, if this ends up being the final season of the show, the streamer might end up adding a couple additional episodes and splitting it into two parts, like they’ve done with their other hit originals, like Ozark and Grace and Frankie.

The plot will likely coincide with the final Heartstopper book.

So far, Alice Oseman has adapted her popular web comic into five graphic novels published by Hachette Children’s Group, which acted as the main source of inspiration for the show. The first two seasons of the Netflix series pulled from volumes 1–3, while season three borrowed from books four and five.

Back in December 2023, Oseman took a hiatus from releasing her comic, which typically comes out in three new releases a month. Now, to coincide with the third season release, Oseman has re-launched her web comic, and these final pages will make up what will eventually be her sixth and final Heartstopper book.

Oseman confirmed this news in 2023 with the announcement of book five, writing: “SOME NEWS! Heartstopper Volume 5 will be released on November 9th 2023, in the UK/Ireland/Australia/New Zealand.. and there will be a Vol 6, the final Heartstopper volume.”

Season four will either borrow entirely from the contents of the volume six, or the writers may decide to pull extra inspiration from Oseman’s corresponding novellas, like Nick & Charlie or This Winter, which take place in the future of Nick and Charlie’s relationship (but no spoilers here).

When will season four be released?

So far, there has been a new season of Heartstopper every year since 2022, with each season coming out a little over a year past the previous installment. This means if season four does arrive in 2025, it will likely be sometime in the winter.

However, based on the fact that Oseman is still releasing her comic, and the fact that there hasn’t even been an announcement for a sixth book yet, it’s likely the fourth season will be produced on a longer timeline.

Still, Oseman offered some hope for a fourth season when she attended a panel this past August. Season three wrapped filming months before the fan event took place, but when the British writer shared her hopes for a certain character’s development, she seemed to hint that more seasons of the show were in store. “I am considering maybe Nick goes to therapy?” Oseman said. “But I’m not quite sure how or when, or whether maybe that’s something to save for the TV show where we’ve got more room.” I’ll take any more Heartstopper I can get.
