The streaming service announced news of a sequel to the 1996 fan favourite during a presentation to advertisers on Wednesday in New York.

No plot details have been released, but Sandler will reprise his role as hockey player-turned-golf star and Christopher McDonald apparently will return as Shooter McGavin.

The X account for Gilmore’s fictional nemesis has been celebrating the news since it broke, beginning with a post featuring a video of his trademark double finger guns with the words, “I’m back.”

A few hours later, McGavin’s account expanded on his message, with a message to Adam Sandler that had been viewed 1.3 million times by Thursday morning:

“Hey @AdamSandler, best of luck in the sequel. You’re going to need it. There won’t be no miracle putt to save you this time. You know it, I know it, the whole world knows. I’m winning the gold jacket this time and there’s nothing you can do about it. See you on the tee box.”

McDonald hinted at the sequel in March on a radio show.

The original movie made $38.8 million at the box office before becoming a cult classic for Sandler fans and golf fans alike.

Now, more than a quarter-century after the original movie, it’s unknown what the storyline for the sequel will be, but we asked a few Canadian PGA Tour pros about it.

“I don’t know, maybe they have a kid,” Adam Hadwin said. “Maybe him and — is it Veronica? No, that’s a different movie. I should know this. I don’t know.”

Pretty close Mr. Hadwin, but Gilmore’s love interest is Virginia, played by Modern Family star Julie Bowen.

Canadian Open champions Nick Taylor also had some thoughts.

We apologize, but this video has failed to load.

“Happy Gilmore 2? It’s funny, watching the first one again, you’re like, it is so wrong with so many golf things he does, but obviously it’s a classic,” Taylor said.

As for a potential plot for the sequel?

“I don’t know. I feel like it’s probably got to be Happy Gilmore’s son somehow steals the gold jacket or something,” Taylor said.

No release date has been announced.
