Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher honoured with FIA awards

Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher received special awards from FIA president Jean Todt at the annual Prize Giving Ceremony in Geneva.

Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher were honoured with special awards from FIA president Jean Todt at the annual Prize Giving Ceremony in Geneva.

This year, the ceremony took place with guests attending virtually due to the global health pandemic, although Schumacher’s wife Corinna accepted in person the President’s Special Award which her husband received jointly with Hamilton.

The award was to recognise not only their seven World Championships apiece but also “the inspiration their sporting and personal commitments have brought to the world”.

Schumacher is the inspiration behind the Keep Fighting Foundation, created by his family to promote the spirit of perseverance.

Corinna Schumacher said: “Michael has always had a big heart to do something for people who are in need. With the Keep Fighting Foundation, we want to continue the work he started.”

Todt added: “Michael and Lewis are champions but also incredible human beings. Michael was always ready to support any kind of action to benefit society, for example his work on road safety. To have people like Michael and Lewis to engage with and educate young people is essential.”

Hamilton also received two more awards – for his seventh World Championship and also, for the third time, the Personality of the Year award voted for by the media.

Mercedes, via Toto Wolff, were ‘presented’ with the trophy for the constructors’ World Championship, with Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen recognised for finishing second and third in the drivers’ standings.

A third President’s Award was given to the team who helped to rescue Romain Grosjean from his horrifying fireball crash in the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Along with F1 chief medical officer Dr Ian Roberts and medical car driver Alan van der Merwe, the marshals who were first at the scene were honoured with Grosjean also joining them on the video call.

The Bahraini marshals were joined by Abdulaziz Al Thawadi, representing his Excellence Sheikh Abdulla Bin Isa Al-Khalifa, the President of the Bahrain Motor Federation, to receive the accolade.

Kimi Raikkonen was also given an award, for Action of the Year to mark his surge through the field on the opening lap of the Portuguese Grand Prix on a slippery Portimao circuit.

Two of F1’s newcomers for 2021 were also honoured – Mick Schumacher, having won the F2 Championship which helped him to earn a drive with Haas, and AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda who was named the Rookie of the Year after winning two races in F2.
