James Corden, Ruth Jones Confirm 'Gavin and Stacey' Christmas ...
Another “Gavin and Stacey” Christmas episode is officially happening.
James Corden and Ruth Jones, the creators and stars of the classic British sitcom, took to Instagram on Friday to share a photo of them holding the script for an episode titled “the finale.”
“Some news… It’s official!!!” Corden and Jones wrote. “We have finished writing the last ever episode of ‘Gavin and Stacey.’ See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James.”
Premiering in 2007, “Gavin and Stacey” follows the title characters, a boy from Essex and a girl from Wales (played by Mathew Horne and Joana Page), as well as Corden’s Smithy and Jones’ Nessa. As the show’s plot description reads, “Gavin and Stacey have been continuing their romance online and by telephone for the last six months. Now they want to be together, but will their friends and family let them?”
Other cast members include Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb as Gavin’s parents, Melanie Walters as Stacey’s mother and Rob Brydon as Stacey’s uncle.
“Gavin and Stacey” aired through 2010 and was a breakout hit for the BBC, winning several BAFTA TV Awards, including comedy performance and the Radio Times audience award.
The show last aired a Christmas special on BBC One in 2019, which earned an astonishing 18 million viewers, making it the most-watched non-sports event in a decade in the U.K. Its last episode ended on an immense cliffhanger, with Nessa declaring her love to Smithy and proposing to him — but fans never got to see Smithy’s response.
