The New Democrats faced a strong challenge from the Conservatives, who were in a close second throughout Monday evening.

Meanwhile, the Bloc Quebecois won a by-election in Lasalle-Emard-Verdun, a riding that had gone to the Liberals ever since its creation in 2015.

The seat was vacated by David Lametti, who had served as justice minister in the Trudeau government.

Meanwhile Thursday, voters will be marking ballots in the provincial Bay of Quinte riding by-election.

Seven candidates are in the running for the seat made available by the sudden resignation of popular MPP Todd Smith. He resigned his seat in order to take a position with Candu Energy.

The only polling results in the riding done several days ago showed Progressive Conservative candidate Tyler Allsopp and Liberal Sean Kelly tied for the lead in the riding.

Both are Belleville city councillors.

Mayor Neil Ellis says tells Quinte News that should one of them win, he’ll be suggesting the vacant council seat go to the person who finished just out of the running in the 2022 municipal election.

That candidate was Margaret Seu.
