The First 'Fallout' TV Show Trailer Looks Almost Too Good To Be True

I think we all have reasons to not like Amazon at this point given its sprawling grip on almost every aspect of life, but boy, can they sure throw money at a TV show.

Finally, they’re doing it for one that seems like a good idea. Not Rings of Power, not whatever Citadel was supposed to be, but Fallout, being made by Westworld’s Jonathan Nolan in collaboration with Bethesda’s Todd Howard. Now, Amazon has released first trailer for Fallout and honestly, it looks almost too good to be true.

I started to believe when we saw the first set photos, which showcased stars like Yellowjackets’ Ella Purnell as vault-leaver Jean and Justfied’s Walton Goggins as a Ghoul. And the third star may the world itself, which the show seems to have created in massive scope but also with fine detail, and retaining the shocking gore and often silly humor of the series.

Granted, a trailer can look good and the final product could underdeliver. I’m thinking of a few seasons of Nolan’s Westworld that didn’t quite stack up. But I don’t think I could have asked for a better introductory spot than what we’re seeing here ahead of the April 12 release of the series on Amazon Prime Video.

I believe the show will also benefit from not being adapted directly from one of the past games. We’re all the way across the country in a ruined Los Angeles, with the reveal there will be segments before the atomic war as well. But the vibe and visuals are close to identical to the games despite the change in location, though it’s not impossible that somehow we see some crossover characters from the series at some point. If not, I don’t really care, so long as the show itself is good.

Here’s how Amazon is describing it:

“Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them.”

If they can pull this off, this will be another enormous win for live-action video game TV shows after The Last of Us and somehow, Peacock’s Twisted Metal which was better than it had any right to be. But this looks bigger than either, and I really cannot wait to see the final product after this. Absolutely wild.
