One person is dead and two others are injured following a “very brazen” daytime triple shooting in a parking lot at Fairview Mall, according to Toronto police.

The shooting occurred around 4:11 p.m. Monday at the shopping mall at Sheppard Avenue East and Highway 404. Police initially found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds, both in their 20s, Duty Insp. Mike Hayles told reporters at the scene.

They were rushed to and remain in hospital; one is in life-threatening condition, the other is in non-life-threatening condition, he said.

Following the police response, a third victim was dropped off at a local trauma centre by a personal vehicle, Hayles continued. Despite receiving treatment, they succumbed to their injuries.

“We do have sufficient information to lead us to believe that the individual who was dropped off at hospital was present here at the scene during the interaction,” he said.

Hayles described the incident as a “very brazen” daytime shooting and urged witnesses with dashcam footage of the area at Sheppard Avenue East and Highway 404 after 4 p.m. Monday to come forward.

Although no suspect information was available, Hayles said police believe several suspects fled on foot and in a vehicle. Investigators at the shooting scene were focussed on a dark-coloured car with all four doors open.

A spokesperson for Fairview Mall confirmed there was “an incident” at their parking lot on Monday and that police were notified immediately and remain on site.

“We take the safety of our guests and employees very seriously and our management team is co-operating with the police investigation,” the spokesperson said in an email to the Star. “The shopping centre remains open for the evening.”

This is the third mall-related shooting to take place in the GTA this year. Last month, Peel police were called to Square One Shopping Centre after an evening shooting in the parking lot; no injuries were reported and three people were taken into custody. Another incident took place at Scarborough Town Centre in February, where police responded to reports about two men chasing someone with a gun nearby.

In August 2022, police put Yorkdale Mall under lockdown after reports of a man shooting a gun into the air while driving on Highway 401 near Allen Road. No injuries were reported, but police arrested a man in his 30s and recovered a firearm.

This is a developing story.
