NEW YORK CITY (TND) — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., on Wednesday urged New York City Mayor Eric Adams to resign as federal investigations into members of his administration continue.

Four high-ranking members of the Adams administration announced their resignations this month. The departures includeNew York City Schools Chancellor David Banks, formerNew York City Police Department Commissioner Edward Caban, former City Hall Chief Counsel Lisa Zornberg, and former City Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwi Vasan.

The FBI recently seized the phones of both Banks and Caban.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez wrote on social media that the resignations are threatening New York City’s ability to function.

“I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City. The flood of resignations and vacancies are threatening gov function,” the congresswoman posted on X.

She added that “nonstop investigations” will make it impossible for the city to recruit and retain qualified officials.

For the good of the city, he should resign,” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez wrote.

Banks announced on Tuesday that he will retire from his position at the end of the school year. Prior to the announcement, he told reporters the federal probe involving him had not "impacted" his job.

Caban resigned on Sept. 13, reportedly telling the New York City Police Department that the investigation was becoming a distraction for the agency.

“The NYPD deserves someone who can solely focus on protecting and serving New York City, which is why – for the good of this city and this department – I have made the difficult decision to resign as Police Commissioner,” Caban said in a memo, according to NBC New York.

On Sept. 14, Zornberg wrote in a three-sentence resignation letter to Adams that she was quitting, the Associated Press reported.

“It has been a great honor to serve the City. I am tendering my resignation, effective today, as I have concluded that I can no longer effectively serve in my position. I wish you nothing but the best,” she reportedly said.

Vasan has cited personal reasons for his resignation.

Adams in a Tuesday press conference refuted the idea that the city will have trouble hiring new officials, noting that “people come in and out of government.”

“We are constantly bringing in new people. So, let's not give the image that all of a sudden, there are people saying, 'hey, I don't want to be in city government.' That is just not true,” he said.
