England vs Ukraine live updates: Kane has early penalty appeal denied in Euro 2024 qualifier

England continue their European Championship Group C qualifying campaign as they face Ukraine at Wembley.

Gareth Southgate's side got off to the perfect start by beating Italy 2-1 in Naples on Thursday evening. First-half goals from Declan Rice and Harry Kane proved too much for the hosts who could only halve the deficit through Mateo Retegui.

It will be Ukraine's first game of the qualifying campaign after they were in friendly action on Thursday, winning 2-0 against Brentford B in Wimbledon.

Starting line-ups

England: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Chilwell; Henderson, Rice, Bellingham; Saka, Kane, Maddison.

Ukraine: Trubin, Karavaev, Skatov, Matvienko, Mykolenko; Stepanenko, Zinchenko; Malinovskyi, Sudakov, Mudryk; Yaremchuk.

Ukraine looking to counter act England style

25' England 0-0 Ukraine

England have set up similarly to the win against Italy; they are operating in a 4-3-3 formation with Rice at the base of the midfield and Henderson and Bellingham ahead of him.

Further forward, Saka is on the right of the front three and Maddison is on the left with Kane leading the line.

Ukraine are doing their best to counter act that tactical set up with a 4-2-3-1.

Zinchenko and Stepanenko are the two players protecting the defence with both wingers — Malinovskyi and Mudryk — having to drop deep to track England's full-backs.

England in complete control after nervy start

20' England 0-0 Ukraine

It has been all England in the last quarter of an hour.

They're not giving Ukraine a second's peace in possession and are enjoying the lion's share of possession.

After the most recent England corner is recycled, Kane rises highest to nod towards goal but his effort is comfortably saved.

Yaremchuk squanders golden opportunity before linesman's flag is raised

16' England 0-0 Ukraine

Ukraine thought they had sprung England's offside trap when Yaremchuk was found by a long ball over the top of the defence.

However, after he dragged his effort wide, he was flagged for offside.

A very regimented defensive line from the home side.

Maddison at the heart of everything for England

12' England 0-0 Ukraine

Maddison is wasting no time in making his presence known on his first start – he's looking to pick the ball up at every opportunity.

Most recently, he picked out former Leicester team mate Ben Chilwell down the left wing but the full-back's whipped cross just evaded Kane before Saka failed to keep it in play.

9' England 0-0 Ukraine

The home side have been much improved in the last few minutes and their first foray into the penalty area sees Kane brought to the ground by Skatov.

However, the referee doesn't think there is enough in the challenge to award a penalty so waves away the protests.

Bright start from Ukraine

5' England 0-0 Ukraine

Ukraine are in no mood to let England dominate this afternoon — they have started the brighter of the two sides.

Yaremchuk has the game's first attempt at goal but his strike from 20 yards is easily blocked by Stones.

An encouraging start for the visitors.

England get things underway at Wembley

1' England 0-0 Ukraine

Following two emotional national anthem renditions, all 22 players and the match officials stand with a Ukraine flag with the word 'PEACE' written across it.

A minute's applause is then held for George Cohen, one of the members of England's 1966 World Cup-winning side — today is the first international game held at Wembley since his passing.

Bukayo Saka gets the ball rolling and we're underway!

Southgate: I'm excited to see Maddison play

Maddison has been handed a huge opportunity to impress in the absence of Foden this afternoon and Southgate is looking forward to seeing what he can contribute.

"He's been consistent for his club, his training for us has been at a really top level so I'm excited to see him play," said the England manager.

"We want him to have the license to drift (inside), that's what he's good at. He's great at finding pockets of space so I don't want to restrict him too much.

"He's got to do his work without the ball but he's got the freedom when we've got the ball to go and hurt them."

Could Zinchenko be the difference for Ukraine?

Could Zinchenko be the difference for Ukraine?

Regular viewers of Premier League football will have become accustomed to seeing Zinchenko playing as a left-back for Manchester City and now Arsenal.

However, for his native Ukraine, he plays in a central-midfield role so expect him to play a key role in the visitors' engine room today.

If he and his team mates are to get a result at Wembley, the 26 year old will have to turn in one of his very best performances.

Inclusion in the starting XI for Jordan Henderson and Kyle Walker means they will both reach 75 caps for England.

The former returns to the team in place of Kalvin Phillips while the latter is playing his fifth successive game.

They both join former goalkeepers Joe Hart and David Seaman on 75 caps, a tally which sees them move joint-24th on the list of most capped England players.

Today's theatre

Wembley Stadium remains one of world football's great arenas.

90,000 people under one roof always makes for an excellent spectacle and today will be no different.

Among those inside the home of English football this afternoon will be just over 4,000 Ukrainians, including plenty of those who have been taken in by the English public since the Russian invasion.

Elsewhere, team news is just 10 minutes away.
