Whenever a stat is bandied about that a team has a remarkably good winning record when their best player scores, it really shouldn’t come as a surprise.

There’s a reason why you get to be a best player — good things happen when you’re on the ice.

So it’s not a shock that Elias Pettersson is very good at scoring game-winning goals.

The Vancouver Canucks have won four games in a row. Their most recent victory was overcoming the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in overtime on Thursday, with Pettersson scoring a thrilling game-winner on a breakaway.

Pettersson has scored all four game winners on this stretch. And now he’s one game-winner away from equalizing a record that’s stood for more than a century: Newsy Lalonde’s outstanding run in Feb. 1921, when he scored the game winner five games in a row.

Lalonde scored 33 goals in 24 games in 1920-21 for the Montreal Canadiens — he was also team captain — and finished the season in a flurry: his five game-winners were in the middle of a 13-game streak with at least a goal.

Lalonde began his run of game-winners Feb. 12, 1921 in Ottawa against the Senators. That also extended his goal-scoring streak to seven games.

He scored the game-winner four days later at home against the Hamilton Tigers, a game where he scored five goals in all. A repeat engagement on Feb. 19 at home against the Senators saw him extend his game-winner streak to three games.

The Habs then visited Ottawa again on Feb. 23, where he scored the game-winner for a fourth straight time, and his run of game-winners ended three days later on Feb. 26 in Hamilton.

Even scoring the game winner in four consecutive games, as Pettersson has now done, is a rare accomplishment.

In the long, storied history of the National Hockey League, Petteresson is just the third player to score four straight game winners, following Daniel Alfredsson with the Ottawa Senators in 2007 and Lalonde, one of the NHL’s first great superstars.

The feat even amazed Pettersson when he was told about it post-game on Thursday.

“Oh, wow that’s cool,” he told Canucks team reporter Kate Pettersen.

The Canucks play again Saturday in Buffalo.
