Child found wandering away from elementary school, investigation ...
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN/Gray News) - An investigation is underway after a child was found wandering away from her elementary school.
The girl’s mother said she got a call from Campbell Elementary School stating her daughter was absent on Tuesday.
“I dropped her off at daycare as usual, and they walked her to school,” the mother wrote in a Facebook post. “Daycare staff saw her walk in through both doors, grab breakfast, and waited outside to ensure none of the kids came back outside. Somehow, my child walked out of school without the staff noticing.”
The mother said her daughter had previously attempted to leave school and that someone was supposed to meet her at the door to prevent it from happening again.
“She walked for over an hour in 30-degree weather before she got rescued by LPD on the side of Cornhusker Highway,” the mother said.
In an interview, the mother noted that the school’s principal had called to apologize for the incident. She said a new plan for her daughter has not been put together and that she is eager for someone to be held accountable.
Lincoln Public Schools said they are working with Campbell Elementary administrators, staff, the student’s family and the daycare provider to investigate the incident.
“As part of the investigation process, and in collaboration with the family and daycare provider, the school will review current protocols and implement an updated safety plan for the student,” the statement read. “Student safety remains one of our top priorities, and we will continue to work in providing a safe learning environment for all students.”
The police report lists the offense as child abuse, however no citations have been made.
“So many things could have happened to her, the mother said. ”Thank God, she was found safe. But there’s so many things and so many crazy people out there that she was exposed to. So I am demanding that they’re held accountable for this.”
