A minor earthquake shook parts of Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and Vancouver Island early this morning.

Recorded at a magnitude of 3.8 by Earthquakes Canada, the quake struck around 4am northeast of Victoria in the Haro Strait. While no damage has been reported, residents across the region felt a brief jolt, with some experiencing rumblings and shakings lasting up to 10 seconds.

This event is a good reminder about the importance of earthquake preparedness, especially in a seismically-active area like Metro Vancouver. Experts recommend reviewing safety measures in your home (especially if you live in an apartment), and ensuring that emergency kits are ready.

As a refresher, here’s what the BC Government suggests you have in your emergency earthquake kit:

Nonperishable food (at least three days’ worth), plus a manual can openerWater (four litres per day per person)Phone charger or power bankRadio (battery-powered or hand-crank)Flashlight (battery-powered or hand-crank)Extra batteriesFirst-aid kit and any regular medicationsPersonal items (toothbrush, contact lenses, etc.)A copy of your emergency plan (it should outline your meeting place with loved ones, any steps to take in your home, etc.)Copies of important personal documents (ID, insurance, etc.)Cash in small billsGarbage bags and moist towelettes (for sanitation)Seasonal clothing and sturdy footwearEmergency blanketDust masksWhistleA “HELP/OK” sign (to display in your window)
