Earth Day '24: Actions for a Sustainable Future - Métis Nation of ...

April 22 is Earth Day! Also known as International Mother Earth Day, it is an occasion to honour our planet and its ecosystems. As well as a reminder that Earth is not merely a resource to be exploited, but rather our collective home, deserving of reverence and protection.

Referring to this day as “Mother Earth Day” is important because it recognizes how closely humanity is linked to nature. Many Indigenous Peoples, like the Métis, see Earth as more than just a source of resources, but as a living entity deserving of respect and care.

However, the health of Mother Earth is under threat due to unsustainable human practices, including rampant consumption, depletion of natural resources, climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. These global crises not only jeopardize the well-being of the planet but also significant risks to human societies and future generations.

To address these challenges, it is vital that we advocate for meaningful changes in industry and government policies. At the same time, individual actions play a crucial role in mitigating our impact on the environment.

The Métis Ecological Footprint Calculator is a unique resource. Rooted in Métis knowledge and teachings, this platform provides insights into environmental stewardship from Indigenous perspectives.

On International Mother Earth Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to protecting and preserving the planet for ourselves and for future generations.
