Drew Lock to start for Giants on Thanksgiving Day vs. Cowboys
For the third time in as many games, the New York Giants will have a different starting quarterback under center.
Drew Lock will get the Thanksgiving Day start for the Giants against the host Dallas Cowboys, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. Tommy DeVito is inactive but will be the team's emergency third quarterback.
With DeVito suffering a right forearm injury in a Week 12 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Lock is the next Giant up. Daniel Jones, who started the team's first 10 games prior to his benching and subsequent release, is now with the Minnesota Vikings practice squad.
It will mark Lock's first start for New York and his first start overall since Week 15 of last season for the Seattle Seahawks.
The good news for the Giants is Lock, who signed with Big Blue as a free agent this offseason, won that start, 20-17, over the Philadelphia Eagles as he played inspired ball in relief of Geno Smith.
The bad news for the Giants is Lock has an unenviable task of leading a New York squad that hasn't won a game since Week 5, which came against Lock's old squad, the Seahawks. That also marked the last time the Giants held a lead in a game.
Since that game, the Giants have lost six straight and are playing a Cowboys team they've lost to on seven straight occasions.
A 2019 NFL Draft second-round pick of the Denver Broncos, Lock still possesses a live arm and will make his 24th career start. He's appeared in three games so far for the Giants, throwing the ball nine times with four completions for 9 yards.
This will surprisingly be the 28-year-old's first time playing against the Cowboys.
Also surprising to many was that upon Jones' benching, Lock, the team's backup throughout the season, wasn't named the starter. It was DeVito who got the nod. After taking a battering from the Buccaneers defense, though, DeVito is unable to start and Lock is getting his opportunity after all.
The Giants (2-9) kick off against the Cowboys (4-7) at 4:30 p.m. ET on Thanksgiving.
