Veteran Jacoby Brissett beat out 2024 No. 3 pick Drake Maye for the starting role to begin the season but Maye made his first appearance during the final drive of the Patriots 24-3 loss to the New York Jets in Week 3.

Maye stated after the game that he will be ready when his time comes to be the Patriots' starting quarterback.

"I'll be ready when my name is called, when my number's called, to go out there and make some plays," Maye told reporters, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "I've been preparing like I'm the starter."

Brissett maintained that he "of course" still feels like the starter and told reporters after the game that he was "not going to overreact to something that I didn't hear," according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters on Friday morning that Brissett is still the starting quarterback. "Jacoby is our quarterback until he is not the quarterback. I thought last night he showed a lot of toughness, a lot of grit," Mayo said, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

"Jacoby is our quarterback until I say he's not the quarterback," Mayo added, per Grant Gordon of NFL.com.

Brissett helped lead the team to a 1-0 start to the season but the offense has not been dynamic. The Patriots are averaging just 102 passing yards per game and have produced just a single passing touchdown. Brissett has managed to not turn the ball over, but he has taken nine sacks.

Maye is the quarterback of the future but Brissett's presence is meant to ease his transition to the professional level. Additionally, the offensive line has struggled and throwing Maye in immediately could have impacted his development.

Maye went 4-of-8 for 22 yards in his drive, taking two sacks. He also had an 11-yard rush on a fourth-and-eight situation. While this was not a dominant stat line, it at least showed that he can handle the offense and deal with the contact that will come with the current state of the offensive line.

Mayo said that he didn't know if the team would make a change at the position and that the coaches would discuss it while preparing for Week 4.

"We talk about it every single week," Mayo said, per Alex Barth of 98.5 The Sports Hub. "We'll get together as a coaching staff."

Mayo and the staff have some extra time to figure out which guy to go with in Week 4 after playing on Thursday and will need to weigh Maye's small sample size against what Brissett has already shown this season.

If New England were to go with Maye in Week 4, he will face a daunting San Francisco 49ers defense in his first career start.
