Maisie Derlega, who was announced as the 2024 Doodle for Google contest winner (Google)

WASHINGTON (7News) — In May, 7News told you of three DMV students whose artwork was selected to represent their region for this year's Doodle for Google contest - one of them being then-Jackson-Reed High School senior Maisie Derlega.

Visit the Google homepage Wednesday morning and you'll find her submission called "Family Dinner" front and center; it's not hard to believe, but Derlega is this year's national winner.

After public voting ended in early June, judges awarded the local artist the "Biggest Smiles Award" and announced her as a national finalist on June 10.

Thousands of students across the U.S., its territories, and military bases created artwork based on the prompt, "My wish for the next 25 years," according to Google. Derlega's artwork showed people interacting with others around a traditional family dinner table as food in the middle spelled out "Google".

“Every Sunday night is filled with chaos, laughter, and the smell of food in my household," Derlega wrote about her artwork. "The standing invitation goes to any friends and family in the area. As my life grows and changes, my wish for the next 25 years is that this tradition remains a constant.”

Google will award Derlega with a $55,000 college scholarship, some Google-themed gear, and a trophy, according to a spokesperson. Her high school will also receive a $50,000 technology package.
