Jonatan Berggren set to get a chance with the Detroit Red Wings
While the Detroit Red Wings went out and made a trade deadline deal, it drew some initial speculation on the next move. While some were thinking about trades, some folks were already thinking about a call-up for the Red Wings to consider.
It will be interesting since the Detroit Red Wings are already without captain Dylan Larkin right now. Without Larkin, the Red Wings certainly struggle, leaving some holes throughout their lineup. But with the recent rumblings, this will lead to a chance for Jonatan Berggren.
Jonatan Berggren is joining the Red Wings in Vegas and will play on Saturday, Steve Yzerman told @iamtrevort on Bally Sports Detroit.
— Brad Galli (@BradGalli) March 9, 2024If the Red Wings want to reward the former second-rounder, a chance to jump in with the Red Wings seems like it's in the cards. With Kostin gone after being traded and the team without Larkin, the opportunity will open up. During the first intermission on Friday, it was confirmed that Jonatan Berggren is joining the team on Saturday, per Steve Yzerman.
Detroit is bringing up Berggren with hopes that he can join the team that has been running 11-7 without Larkin for the time being. They're going to see if Berggren can bring a nice shake-up for the team and help them in their attempt to clinch a playoff berth down the stretch.
Berggren has played in nine games with the Red Wings this season, logging two goals and adding three assists for five total points. But the majority of this season has been with the Grand Rapids Griffins, as Berggren has not gotten much of a chance to show his stuff.
In his 43 games with the Griffins, Berggren has 19 goals and 27 assists for 46 points. He's looked the part for the Griffins, putting together some quality offense and really finding his stride. While some folks are a bit upset that Berggren is trapped in the minors, he's going to get his chance.
There were even rumblings that the Red Wings were going to trade Berggren at the trade deadline. With the right package, he may have been on his way out. However, he is still with the team and is going to get another chance with the team.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Berggren on his return. He has his work cut out for him, with the first game being against the Vegas Golden Knights, who are arguably vaulting themselves up the power rankings after their busy trade deadline.
Hopefully, Berggren can earn himself some time to stick around with the Red Wings if he is able to get into a groove with the team. After all, Steve Yzerman said on Friday that they are going to call up and keep around the players they see fit to help them compete down the road as the team fights for a playoff berth.
