Best Boxing Day climbing deals - Gripped Magazine
Home > Buyer's Guide
Chances are you got most of what you wanted for Christmas, but if you are like most of us, there are still a few things you could use to round out your rack. So, to help you get those last few critical items, we’ve put together a list of our favourite climbing gear deals you might have overlooked, or Santa forgot to bring you.
Best for climbers seeking a comfortable harness for cragging, multi-pitch, and alpine adventures
A versatile and supportive harness
Featuring a wide waist belt and supportive leg loops, the Sirana does an admirable job of providing comfort on long routes or when working sport climbs. Edelrid uses its unique Soft Frame construction that allows the harness to easily conform to your body while also reducing the packed size. Climbers who carry a large rack will appreciate the five useable gear loops (four on the XS size), and the ice-clipper slots provide additional versatility for winter climbing. For additional safety, Edelrid uses a contrasting red thread wear indicator at the tie-in points to let you know when you need to replace the harness.
Best for climbers seeking a simple, highly functional, and affordable chalk bag
A classic chalk bag
Built with a rugged polyester fabric, the Edge chalk bag is perfectly sized for cragging or longer multi-pitch climbing. MEC has spec’d a slightly tapered shape that encourages the bag to sit against the body, ensuring easy access when the pump clock is ticking. The bag comes with a lightweight belt and a zippered pocket for small essentials. You might as well get two at this price!
Best for climbers valuing durability when cragging or in the gym
A durable all-around workhorse rope
Indoor lead climbing can be tough on ropes. The gyms’ relatively closely spaced bolts and safe fall zones encourage climbers to push themselves resulting in more frequent falls. This is not the place for less durable super-skinny ropes you would use during difficult outdoor redpoints. Instead, what you want is a beefy workhorse rope that can withstand the repeated falls and resulting wear that is the norm with indoor leading. For these conditions, consider the Sterling VR9 9.8 mm. The VR9 hits the sweet spot for a general-purpose climbing ropes. Not only is it able to shrug off the abuse of extended top-roping and frequent lead falls, but it’s also sufficiently light and slim for harder redpoints on plastic and the outdoors. For addition durability and versatility, Sterling has also added a DryCore treatment to the inner yarns to help prevent excessive fibre abrasion and reduce water absorption.
Best for climbers needing additional light during approaches or around camp
A small headlamp with Alex Honnold branding
With its 375-lumen light output, the Onsight 375 Honnold Headlamp is sufficiently bright for climbing and pre-dawn approaches. Black Diamond has included its unique PowerTap feature that allows the lamp to achieve full power with a simple push of a button. The lamp operates on three AAA batteries (included) that can be swapped out for a rechargeable Black Diamond 1800 lithium-ion battery, which is sold separately. The Alex Honnold colourway highlights the fact that a portion of each sale goes to support the Honnold Foundation, an organization that is working to provide accessible solar energy.
Best for climbers seeking a versatile lantern when camping
A bright lantern that also operates as a power bank
This versatile, light, and compact lantern not only provides useful area lighting when camping but can also serve double-duty as a power bank. The light is powered by four AA batteries as well as a built-in rechargeable 5,200mAh lithium-ion battery. This combination provides plenty of juice to power the 250-lumen LED as well as charge (via a USB port) small electronic devices. A dimming switch allows you to adjust the brightness depending on conditions, and a lock mode prevents accidental activation and unwanted energy drain. This is a useful all-in-one device for any climbing camping situation.
Best for climbers seeking a stylish button-up for apres climbing festivities
A lined flannel top for cold conditions
Featuring a rugged organic cotton exterior fabric that’s lined with a cozy organic cotton fleece, the Project Lined Flannel is perfect for cool weather socializing. The classic pattern and comfortable boxy shape provide sufficient style, making it ideal for going to the gym or post-climbing hydration sessions.
A stylish Y-back top
A stylish Y-back top
With its flattering Y-back shape and light polyester fabric, the Integrale Tank is the perfect choice for indoor climbing or warm weather cragging. Unlike similar-looking but less-climbing specifc tops, Black Diamond has added a bit more length at the back to ensure the tank stays put under a climbing harness. At this price, you have no excuse for not getting one – or two!
Best for climbers seeking maximum sensitivity on steep routes and boulders
A highly sensitive shoe for difficult climbing
With its powerful tensioning, highly asymmetric downturn shape, and minimalist midsole, the Shadow provides the perfect combination of sensitivity and precision climbers demand for difficult climbing. Climbers will also appreciate the generous amounts of rubber on the forefoot and heel, which help make light work of any technical hooking that is frequently encountered on modern plastic climbing. Other notable features include a stretch-resistant microfiber upper for consistent fit and a 4.3 mm outsole of extra-sticky Fuse rubber for extra grip on tenuous footholds.
Best for climbers seeking exceptional traction and durability
A rugged approach shoe
With its rugged suede upper, shock-absorbing dual-density EVA midsole, and grippy Vibram Megagrip outsole, the Scarpa Crux is the perfect shoe for challenging climbing approaches. The shoe is built on a board last that creates a solid platform and provides the required stability and protection when carrying climbing packs on difficult trails. At the front of the shoe, Scarpa adds a rubber rand for increased abrasion resistance, while the to-toe-lacing allows climbers to fine-tune the fit when moving on fifth-class terrain. This is a solid, rugged, and versatile approach shoe ¬¬– check it out!
Best for climbers seeking additional warmth in cold conditions
An exceptionally warm base layer top
The T3 Warmest Base Layer provides the additional warmth required when mountaineering or during extended belaying in winter conditions. The top is made with Power Stretch fleece fabric that provides excellent wicking and, thanks to the materials grid construction, efficiently traps warmth without adding excessive bulk. The addition of spandex offers stretch and allows for easy movement, while the generous front zip adds venting during periods of high exertion.
Best for climbers spending extended time in cold weather
An exceptionally warm base layer bottom
If your climbing plans include spending any time in frigid sub-zero conditions, consider getting a pair of MEC T3 Warmest Base Layer Bottoms. Constructed with the same Power Stretch fleece fabric that is used in MEC’s T3 tops (see above), the bottoms, not surprisingly, deliver similar levels of warmth and wicking. The result is low-bulk warmth for additional comfort when belaying at the local ice climbing crag. Get a pair to match the T3 Tops and enjoy the winter weather.
