Day of the Dead

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - A vibrant celebration honoring loved ones that have passed on is happening Friday night in Wausau.

The Day of the Dead Celebration is happening at Monk Botanical Gardens. The celebration remembers those who have passed away in Mexico, and many countries in central America. There is one rule at the celebration. No weeping. To create a happy atmosphere, there will be activities for all ages, like face painting, dance performances, food and drink vendors, and much more.

“It’s going to be so much fun. We are super excited to have activities for children. The kids will be able to do crafts like coloring skulls. They will have other activities going on for puzzles and playing Loteria. Loteria is like the Mexican bingo. So that’s for kids and families,” said Mariana Savela, President of OLA.

Volunteers have been hard at work for the event Friday. They have been setting up tables, decorations, and the tombstones at the gardens since Thursday. They will be working hard Friday too. Ashley Baltazar is volunteering for her 2nd year. Her daughter is also one of the dancers performing. She says volunteering for such a good cause means everything to her.

“You know, giving your heart, giving your time to something you know will make a difference for the community, for the kids, something you know they’ll enjoy. You know, people love to be together and enjoy things together,” said Baltazar.

Support for the celebration was provided through a community art grant.

If you want to come out, it starts at 5:30 p.m. It is $5 per person. If you come in a day of the dead costume, you will only pay $1. Reminder, this costume cannot just be a Halloween costume.

Monk Botanical Gardens is located at 1800 N 1st Ave, Wausau.
