Conor McGregor is determined to keep his foot in the door in the combat sports space, and it appears he may be getting some help from some very powerful and influential people.

McGregor took to social media on December 17 to announce he was in talks to face influencer and WWE Superstar Logan Paul in an exhibition boxing match in India. According to McGregor’s post, the “Ambani family” are seemingly backing/funding the concept.

After the fight, McGregor plans to “seek” his return to the UFC. McGregor also used the post to dispel any rumors that he would be facing new rival Ilia Topuria.

The answer is yes, in a way. Paul posted the image below on his IG story, which seems to serve as some confirmation there have been talks of having the exhibition fight.

Paul’s post adds tons of legitimacy because McGregor has been known to say some outlandish things on social media. Having Paul acknowledge the post in this way goes a long way toward legitimizing the possibility that the fight happens.

Paul is no stranger to the boxing ring. In fact, he’s had an exhibition and official boxing match with his Prime business partner KSI. Paul also had an exhibition boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2021 and former mixed martial artist Dillon Danis in 2023.

The short answer here is yes, with conditions.

McGregor is under contract with the UFC, which prohibits him from participating in combat sports events that aren’t associated with the promotion. The UFC and Dana White were heavily involved in the promotion of McGregor’s fight with Mayweather back in 2017.

It stands to reason, even for an exhibition, the UFC would need to be a part of this event on some level. Need more fuel for this fire?

White told the media on Saturday night following UFC Tampa that he was working on something that no one would see coming.

A McGregor-Paul boxing match with the UFC co-promoting sounds like something that would fit that description. Let’s also remember Paul’s Prime energy drink is an official partner of the UFC.

Realistic? That’s a tough term in 2024, let alone moving into 2025. It’s easier to talk percentages. All things considered, I’d say there’s about a 30% chance we ever see McGregor fight in the UFC again.

There are strict testing procedures for banned substances and hoops McGregor still has to jump through to be eligible to compete. Many believe these impediments may be too much for McGregor to overcome at this stage in his life.

He’s also 36 years old and has been inactive in any combat sport for 3.5 years.

The more time he spends out, the less likely it seems he’ll be able to come back to the UFC. McGregor was recently found liable for sexual assault in a civil case, which will make him a tough sell for many people across the world in any event.

There are tons of layers here, and perhaps this exhibition fight in India will serve as a way for the UFC to test the waters as it pertains to the public reception of McGregor and an event he headlines.

The bottom line is that this story has some real legs, and don’t be surprised to hear it officially announced sometime in the New Year or sooner.
