The Avalanche defeated the Edmonton Oilers, 3-2, in overtime Saturday night in Edmonton. Here are three takeaways from the road win:

MacKinnon vs. McDavid

All eyes on the Hart Trophy candidates. Nathan MacKinnon and Connor McDavid are must-watch TV, but especially on nights when the Avs play the Oilers. Here’s how the superstars stacked up in a fast-paced game filled with momentum swings.

—MacKinnon: Assisted on the overtime game-winning goal to Artturi Lehkonen, recorded six shots on goal.

—McDavid: Zero points, recorded five shots on goal, and posted a minus-two rating.

Walker’s breakout

Remember the initial confusion over the addition of Sean Walker? Makes plenty of sense now. The defenseman acquired in the Ryan Johansen trade scored his first goal with the Avalanche. In the second period, to break a scoreless tie, he jumped into the rush and beat Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner with a snapshot from the right circle. Walker wasn’t done yet.

He tied the game, 2-2, with under 6 minutes left in regulation with his second goal of the night. Walker went streaking into the slot and finished a pass from Casey Mittelstadt.

The Avalanche welcomed back three wingers to the lineup in Jonathan Drouin (lower-body injury), Artturi Lehkonen (illness) and Zach Parise (lower-body injury). It meant the lineup was at full strength, minus captain Gabe Landeskog, for the first time since early November. Just in time for the stretch run before the playoffs.

Oilers 3, Avalanche 2 (OT)

What happened: Colorado beat one of the NHL’s most high-powered teams in a back-and-forth overtime road win.

What went right: After a scoreless first period, defenseman Sean Walker scored his first goal with the Avalanche since joining them at the trade deadline from Philadelphia. A third-period Oilers goal (Zach Hyman) was called off upon video review for a kicked puck. Walker scored his second goal of the night to tie the game, 2-2, and force overtime. Artturi Lehkonen scored the game-winning goal in overtime on a feed from Nathan MacKinnon.

What went wrong: The Oilers blocked 18 shots in the first period. Jonathan Drouin failed to convert a penalty shot in the second period. Edmonton tied the game, 1-1, in the third with a Warren Foegele tip-in goal. The Oilers took the lead on a Sam Carrick wrister later in the period.

Between the pipes: Alexandar Georgiev made 32 of 34 saves. Edmonton’s Stuart Skinner stopped 41 of Colorado’s 44 shots on goal.

What’s next: The Avalanche (43-20-5) face the Blues at 6 p.m. Tuesday in St. Louis.
