The 2024 college football season began with an upset in the land of Guinness as No. 10 Florida State got beat by unranked Georgia Tech 24-21.

It was a beautifully dumb ACC football game, featuring a trick play, an underwhelming performance by DJ Uiagalelei and improbable field goals.

But also, the result really impacts Florida State’s chances of making the expanded College Football Playoff. At the very least, FSU’s road to getting there seems tougher, putting itself in a scenario where it likely needs to run the table and win the ACC title to get in. The playoff aside, the game didn’t forecast a great future for FSU this season.

And college football folks on social media seemed to have a bit of fun at Florida State’s expense on Saturday after its loss. Remember, not long after missing the College Football Playoff last year, FSU sued the ACC – to sum it up in the simplest way – to get out of the league to potentially join one like the SEC or Big Ten, because FSU feels like its falling behind in the so-called college football arms race due to TV revenue. Essentially, FSU blamed the ACC for missing the playoff.

After all that political posturing by FSU that made a lot of people roll their eyes, folks had jokes after Florida State got dusted by Georgia Tech:

The ACC should consider suing FSU for this performance.

Ahh now I see why FSU is so desperate to leave the ACC

Football operating expenses per most recent NCAA financial reports:

Florida State $75.6M

Georgia Tech $35.4M

????doesn’t buy everything.

Weird stat: no college football team suing to leave its current conference has won its season opener in Ireland

Can’t sue your athletics conference trying to get out of it and then lose your first conference game after filing the lawsuit. One of those unwritten rules.
