All programs are targeted to Fourth Grade, but can be adjusted to all grade levels. Ranger-in-Classroom programs are open to any education group.
Rising From the Heat: Three-Part Fire Ecology SeriesThis three-part, comprehensive series includes a pre-trip classroom visit, an in-park field trip, and a post-trip classroom visit. This series approach is designed to engage students both in school and in the field, to fulfill a variety of needs, learning styles, and goals.
Part 1: Ranger-in-Classroom Program - Who Am I?Duration: 45 minutes
In this ranger-led hands-on activity, students will learn about and identify fire dependent specimens of plants and animals.
Duration: 2 hours
Meet the ranger at Manzanita Lake, where students will hike 1.5 miles round trip on the Craigs Lake trail. Students will learn to take firsthand weather and climate observations in order to predict fire behavior. While hiking the Craigs Trail, students will use observation skills and journaling activities to learn about and record examples of fire dependent species, fire adaptations, and healthy and unhealthy forests.
Duration: 45 minutes
A ranger will facilitate a mural drawing activity, where each student contributes to the drawing of a forest that has been rejuvenated by a controlled burn. In addition, students will consider fire safety and things they can do to keep their communities safe from fire.
While we strongly recommend you consider partaking in all three Fire Ecology Series parts, we also understand that sometimes schedules only allow for one program. We are happy to adjust either of the ranger-in-classroom portions of the series to meet your specific needs.
