Alberta-born Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland was ticketed for $273 dollars after being caught speeding more than 30 km/h over the limit.

The minister was pulled over for driving 132 km/h while travelling between Grande Prairie and Peace River and has since paid the ticket, her office confirmed.

It did not say when the ticket was issued, but the $273 fine indicates Freeland was clocked driving 32 km/h over the posted speed limit, according to province’s scale of fines for speeding.

The ticket also comes with four demerit points towards her licence, which generally transfer between provinces. In Alberta, drivers who receive eight or more demerit points within a two-year period receive a one-month suspension.

Alberta defines excessive speeding as going more than 51 km/h over the speed limit, at which point a mandatory court appearance is required and fines are at the discretion of the court.

The ticket was first reported on far-right media sites which claimed the ticket was issued on Aug. 15.

But Mounties told Postmedia they have no record of anyone in the region being issued a speeding ticket on that date.

The Alberta Sheriffs Branch also performs highway patrol throughout the province.

The minister was in Peace Country on Aug. 15 for a news conference after touring an energy production facility.

She had events in Alberta between Aug. 13 and Aug. 19 before travelling east to P.E.I., according to her public itinerary.

Freeland, 55, was born in Peace River and attended high school in Edmonton before leaving the province to attend Harvard University.
