Cher, 77, has revealed why she dates younger men, like her 38-year-old current boyfriend Alexander “A.E.” Edwards. Namely: He's alive. We're not talking about a “living in the moment” joyous spirit what-have-you, like, he's physically alive.

“The reason I got with young men is because men my age are older—well, now they’re all dead—but before, they were always terrified to approach me,” she told Jennifer Hudson on Wednesday’s episode of her eponymous show. “And younger men—they were raised by women like me.”

So when a potential paramour tells Cher that she reminds him of his mom, it’s not an insult, it’s a plus.

Edwards, with whom Cher has said she fell in love with over text message and whom she first believed she was too old for, isn’t the singer’s first age gap relationship, though their four-decade ascensional difference is the most significant. Cher has been linked to both Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, both 10-ish years younger than her, and the singer was 11 years junior to her first husband, Sonny Bono, who died in 1998.

Of course, Cher has been dishing out dating truths for a long time now. Who could forget the 1996 interview in which she compared men to dessert, saying, “A man is absolutely not a necessity"? Asked to clarify whether viewing men as a little treat was a dig, she added, “Not at all, I adore dessert. I love men. I think men are the coolest, but you don't really need them to live.”

And then, of course, her unforgettable response to her mother telling her to settle down and marry a rich man. “I said, ‘Mom, I am a rich man.’"

“My experience with men is great because I pick them because I like them,” she concluded. “I don't need them.”

Cher will celebrate her 78th birthday on May 20th. Last year, she wondered publicly when she would feel old, and added her own “I’m dyslexic” twist to the old “age ain’t nothing but a number” discourse. Nothing but a number, and her brain has a hard time processing it, so it simply won't. Iconic.
