A return home didn’t do anything to improve the Canadiens’ fortunes, and now they return to the road to take on the Detroit Red Wings.
Of the teams that were supposed to take a step forward in the Atlantic Division this season, the Red Wings are the only club that has actually vaulted itself into a playoff spot. The arrival of a disgruntled Alex DeBrincat from one of those other Atlantic upstarts, the Ottawa Senators, has been critical to Detroit’s early-season success as he sits fourth in the league goal-scoring race. He’s one member of a strong power play, though that situation is commanded by Dylan Larkin, who has 11 power-play points already, one-third of his career high in that category (31) set last season.
As it always is, disciplined play will be key for Montreal, not only surviving the penalty kills, but staying out of situations that create them. The Canadiens were guilty of some ill-timed penalties in Tuesday’s game versus Tampa Bay, and a repeat of those issues could also lead to a repeat of the lopsided score the Canadiens experienced two nights ago.
