Unpacking Dua Lipa And Callum Turner's Already Captivating ...

Dua Lipa and Callum Turner are doing Sunday dressing—read: roll-out-of-bed-and-throw-on-jeans-and-tees—except it’s not Sunday, and the hottest couple of the moment are in Beverly Hills and their shoes are not Birkenstocks, but Alaïa mesh flats and box-fresh trainers. The pair, who have been dating since approximately January 8th and have had the press captivated since, displayed all the signifiers of a new couple—brushed-back bedhead hair that showed blow-dries are not top priority right now; fresh, no make-upped skin; and the kind of hands-on attachment that shows they are firmly romantically entangled. It was PDA fashion at its foremost.

Lipa, who is currently on the awards season trail for Barbie and in promo mode for her film debut Argylle, is not typically a jeans and a vest gal. Sure, she’ll do jeans and a vintage Dior halter-neck; jeans and a Dion Lee corset; jeans and a Chanel pullover, but this is the most pared-back we have seen the pop star for some time. Last week, my colleague Daniel Rodgers commented on her sudden pivot to smart casual off the back of a pair of chinos. So far, so Callum.

Look closely though, and the “Houdini” singer’s outfits still have the hallmarks of someone who is about to perform at the Grammys and the Brits. A pair of Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger earrings dotted with rubellites and diamonds for a touch of sparkle; a Bottega Veneta Gemelli bag thrown over her shoulder; a comprehensive roster of black coats leaning heavily on Alaïa, Gucci and Maison Margiela. Or, as printed on her seemingly plain vest, a couple of mini interlocking Cs illustrating that her basics are Chanel, thank you very much. While much has been made of Lipa perhaps tempering her brand-heavy street style in line with Turner’s lo-fi fashion sense, Dua still looks like she’s a current Gucci girl and Callum looks like he could be wearing Gant.

Such is the allure of the internet boyfriend. We fall for scruffy lads with boyish charm because they look like the cute guy from the coffee shop, until Jonathan Anderson snaps them up and they start wearing glittery flares (Kit Connor) and crushed velvet vests (Josh O’Connor). It’s only a matter of time before Turner, who was scouted as a model at 17 and worked briefly with Burberry, becomes a campaign star again and Dua-isms start punctuating his wardrobe. Perhaps a Tiffany & Co. pin—à la Jeremy Allen White—on the lapel of his suiting on the Masters of the Air press tour? (Turner’s star has ascended even higher thanks to the bromance between himself, Austin Butler, and Barry Keoghan at the heart of this miniseries.)

“As long as I keep working with good people, that’s all that matters,” the London-born actor once told Vogue of his commitment to the craft, rather than Hollywood. And then, Lipa came along and Beverly Hills hangouts started to look appealing. Time will tell if this is a publicity-driven flirtation, but watching their mutual styles converge is an entertaining sport that’s about to hit the big leagues—at least if their body language is to be believed.
