Stamps Lose Last Second Heartbreaker - Calgary Stampeders

Tommy Stevens rushed for three touchdowns, but the Stamps fell 31-29 on a last second field goal on Thursday night against the Ottawa Redblacks.

The loss drops the Stampeders to 4-6 while the Redblacks now sit 6-2-1 on the season.

It was not the start the Stampeders were hoping for as Peyton Logan fumbled the football on the first play from scrimmage. It was recovered by Ottawa at the Calgary 23-yardline.

The turnover resulted in a Redblacks field goal to make the score 3-0.

Following a 38-yard pass interference call in the Redblacks endzone, the ball was moved to the one-yardline and Tommy Stevens drove through the pile for the touchdown to make it 7-3.

Ottawa countered with a touchdown of their own on a 25-yard rush to make it 10-7 Redblacks with 6:31 to go in the first quarter.

Calgary struck right back with a 46-yard pass from Jake Maier to Ishmael Hyman which got them down to the Ottawa one-yardline. Stevens got his second touchdown of the quarter on the next play to make it 14-10 Stampeders.

The Redblacks added a field goal on the last play of the first quarter making the score 14-13 Calgary after one.

Cody Grace booted a punt-single on their next drive, adding a point to their lead.

Then, Ottawa countered with a punt-single of their own with 4:02 to go until halftime to make the score 15-14.

Another single was put on the board by Calgary with 2:01 to go making it 16-14.

It was Ottawa who scored the next major on a short pass with just 34-seconds left in the half. They took the lead 21-16 going into halftime.

The Redblacks added to their lead with a long drive that resulted in a touchdown to make the score 28-16 with 9:28 to go in the third.

Rene Paredes kicked a 29-yard field-goal to answer with three for the Stampeders making it 28-19 heading into the fourth quarter.

Maier hit Reggie Begelton with a 50-yard pass down to the Ottawa four-yardline to start the final quarter. Stevens rushed into the endzone for his third touchdown of the night to make the score 28-26 with 10:09 to go in the game.

The Stampeders came up with back-to-back sacks on the next Ottawa drive. First, from rookie DB Kenyon Reed and then Mike Rose to force a Redblacks punt.

Paredes hit a 48-yard field goal with 2:23 remaining to give the Stampeders the 29-28 lead.

Calgary got a huge third down stop but were unable to get a first down and had to punt the ball away.

Ottawa got the ball back with 48-seconds remaining. They moved the ball into Stamps territory and hit a 51-yard field goal to steal the 31-29 victory.

NEXT UP

The Stamps are now on a bye-week followed by the Labour Day Classic on Monday, Sept. 2 at 4 p.m. against the Edmonton Elks.
