Blowing snow advisory

Poor visibility in snow and blowing snow developed overnight Tuesday and Environment Canada has issued a Blowing Snow Advisory for the Central Plains, Red River Valley and Southeastern Manitoba regions. Communities included are Portage la Prairie, Morden, Winkler, Carman, Winnipeg, Morris, Steinbach and Vita.

You can find the latest Road Report and Cancellation information here.

Blowing snow advisories are issued when winds are expected to create blowing snow giving poor visibility to 800 meters or less for at least 3 hours. Because of the strong wind and conditions, all Portage la Prairie School Division buses, including in-town bus routes and shuttles, will not run today. Hutterian and Oakville schools will stay closed, but all schools in the City of Portage la Prairie will be open for those who can attend safely.

"Reduced visibilities in blowing snow are expected in open areas of the Red River Valley overnight tonight as gusts of 60 to 70 km/h develop," stated the Advisory. "Widespread poor visibility in blowing snow, approaching zero at times, will encompass most of the region during the day on Wednesday as winds increase to 60 gusting to 80 km/h."

You can find the latest forecast details and warnings here on the Kitson's Towing weather page.

Winds will diminish and visibility will improve over the Central Plains including the city of Winnipeg, by late Wednesday afternoon. Improvement over the south is expected come Wednesday evening.

Outside of the wind, the day is expected to bring a mix of sun and cloud, with temperatures steady around -14.

Travel is expected to be hazardous in some area due to reduced visibility, and visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero throughout the day.
