Bill Clinton gives surprise take on who the first woman president will ...
Former President Bill Clinton said that he still thinks that the United States will have a female president “pretty soon.”
But Clinton said that given the political climate in the country, that first female president would likely be a “conservative Republican woman,” the Hill reported.
Appearing on “CBS News Sunday Morning” with the outlet’s Tracy Smith, Clinton said, “I still think we’ll have a … female president pretty soon.”
Clinton’s wife, Hillary Clinton, the former first lady, U.S. senator and secretary of state, ran for president in 2016 but lost to Republican Donald Trump.
Trump in 2024 defeated another woman, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, to win the presidency.
Because the country has “moved to the right,” Clinton said that he believes “it would probably be easier for a conservative Republican woman to win” the White House.
“I think if Hillary had been nominated in 2008, she woulda walked in, just like Obama did,” Clinton said, referring to two-term Democratic President Barack Obama, who served from 2009 to 2017.
Clinton, who also served two terms in the White House, said, “I think all these cultural battles that we’re fighting make it harder in some ways for a woman to run,” according to the New York Post.
“So, you think it has more to do with party than gender?” Smith asked.
“No,” Clinton said. “Although I think it would probably be easier for a conservative Republican woman to win.”
Clinton campaigned for Harris in the campaign’s homestretch and appeared alongside President Joe Biden while Biden was still in the race.
Clinton, who served from 1993 to 2001, said it would be a “travesty” if Trump became the president again.
