The son of former professional tennis player Bryan Shelton, the Atlanta-born youngster started playing tennis regularly as a 12-year-old.
He remained in the United States for his junior career before committing to the University of Florida's tennis program.
Coached by his father, Shelton helped the Gators secure their first-ever national championship in 2021 before winning the NCAA Singles Championship in 2022.
Finishing his sophomore year as the No. 1 ranked player in the country, he intended to return to college in 2023 to finish his degree.
However, following a stunning run at the Cincinnati Masters where he defeated world No. 5 Casper Ruud, he opted to turn professional and complete his degree online.
He then made his Grand Slam debut at the US Open, where he lost in the first round as a wildcard.
Now 22 years old, Shelton is ranked as the world No. 89.
His current run at the Australian Open is his career-best performance at a major.

In his fourth round match against Alexei Popyrin, the American averaged a first serve speed of 200.1km/h, with a top speed of 223km/h.
On top of this, his strength is highlighted in his powerful groundstrokes, often pushing his opponents deep into the court.
He has also shown his ability to maintain his cool in big moments, winning key points and tiebreaks.
Shelton has played in seven tiebreaks at the 2023 Australian Open, emerging victorious in five of them.

He then held his nerve against Nicolas Jarry in the second round, winning two tiebreaks in a professional performance.
Arguably his best showing so far at Melbourne Park came against local hope Alexei Popyrin in the third round, where he won convincingly in straight sets.
Shelton's then continued his strong form in a fourth round clash with fellow American J.J. Wolf, where he held on to win in five sets.
His quarter-final match with Tommy Paul is scheduled for Wednesday, January 25 (local time).
