A windstorm in the night has knocked out power in areas across the Lower Mainland.

More than 3,500 BC Hydro customers in the Bridgeport area are without power this morning after a windstorm whipped through the region Friday night and Saturday morning.

BC Hydro is reporting six areas affected by power outages in Richmond on Saturday morning, with the largest one affecting residents between River and Vanguard roads and Bridgeport and Sea Island Way.

Power is also out in an area west of No. 5 Road to Seahan Crescent between Williams Road and Steveston Highway. This was caused by wires coming down and is affecting 258 BC Hydro customers.

There is also a power outage east of No. 5 Road between Westminster Highway and River Road affecting 270 customers.

Two blocks on Bakerview Drive - close to No. 4 and Williams roads - is affecting 18 BC Hydro customers. As of 6:47 a.m., no crews had been assigned to this area.

Another outage is on Rice Mill Road and appears to be close to the BC Ferries repair yard.

Also affected are fewer than five BC Hydro customers in east Richmond at 23400 Dyke Rd.

As of 7 a.m., there were 113,000 customers who had lost their power in the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast and 7,400 customers out on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. The hardest hit areas are Surrey, Maple Ridge, Vancouver and Port Coquitlam, according to BC Hydro.

"All available BC Hydro crews and contractor crews will continue to work around-the-clock until power is restored," BC Hydro said in a media statement.
