Baby Reindeer

Netflix

The Emmys aired last night and distributed a number of awards to…not all that many shows. Some stood out more than others, and as such, you may want to start watching the ones you’ve missed. I would consider the top shows to be Shogun, Hacks, Baby Reindeer and The Bear, and you’ll need three streaming services between those to achieve that. So let’s go down the list.

Shogun

FX

Shogun, with 18 total Emmy wins including Best Drama, Best Actor and Actress in a Drama, airs on FX/Hulu. It is only one season and was originally meant to be a miniseries, but it has now been greenlit for more. It is 10 episodes long.

The Bear

FX

The Bear lets us stick in the FX/Hulu camp, as that’s where it airs. The Bear won Best Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress and Guest Actor in a comedy, but don’t expect a true “comedy” as most people don’t really understand why it’s in that category. It’s very stressful. These awards were for season 2, but season 3 has already aired and a fourth season should air in less than a year. Each season is 10 episodes.

Hacks

Max

Hacks won for Best Comedy and Best Actress in a comedy. That airs on HBO/Max. I’m not quite sure which season won the Emmys due to the timing, but it has three seasons released and they are 10, 8 and 9 episodes long respectively. Unlike The Bear it is very much a comedy.

Baby Reindeer

Netflix

Baby Reindeer swept the Best Limited Series category with the main prize, and awards for Best Actor and Actress in a Limited Series as well. It airs on Netflix. Unlike other shows that stretch the definition of what a limited series is (True Detective: Night Country? The fourth season?), this is truly a limited series based on real-life events that happened to its star, and there is no further story to be told here.

If you wanted to watch some of the other winners besides these four which took almost all the major categories we have:

The Crown – Netflix Mr. and Mrs. Smith – Amazon Prime Video True Detective: Night Country – HBO/Max Slow Horses – Apple TV+ Ripley – Netfix

All of those shows only won one Primetime Emmy each, as no, I’m not kidding when I say Shogun, Hacks, Baby Reindeer and The Bear took literally everything else. It’s easy to recommend all of those. The Crown, Ripley and Night Country are probably acquired tastes, however. Slow Horses may be my favorite show here, so give that a chance.
