Avril Lavigne Appointed To The Order Of Canada

Avril Lavigne is one of 83 new appointments to the Order of Canada announced today (June 27) by the Governor General of Canada Mary Simon.

The pop-punk princess from Napanee, ON is being recognized as one of the individuals who have made "positive and lasting impacts on communities here in Canada or who have brought honour to our country abroad."

On the Governor General's site, it lists a mini-bio for Lavigne, highlighting her accomplishments as "one of the best-selling female artists of all time. With over 50 million albums sold worldwide, she paved the way for female-driven punk-rock music and continues to do so today."

In addition, it acknowledges her charitable work, nothing she is "generous with her time, she supports individuals with serious illnesses, disabilities and Lyme disease through the Avril Lavigne Foundation. A global ambassador for Special Olympics, she promotes inclusion and helps end the stigma around intellectual disabilities."

This year's class of honourees will be appointed the Order at ceremonies some time later this year.
