Arizona Coyotes minority owner Andrew Barroway has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest Thursday in Aspen, Colo., the NHL said in a statement Friday. Barroway is being held on charges of second-degree assault (a fourth-degree felony), third-degree assault (a class 1 misdemeanor) and domestic violence, according to Aspen Police. News of the arrest was first reported by Aspen Daily News.

“The National Hockey League is aware of the arrest of Arizona Coyotes’ minority owner Andrew Barroway,” the NHL’s statement said. “Pending further information, he has been suspended indefinitely.”

At approximately 8:40 a.m. Thursday, Aspen Police were called to a report of domestic violence at the Limelight Hotel. According to a warrantless affidavit, there were reports of “yelling and screaming” coming from a hotel room. When police arrived at the hotel room, two individuals — identified as Andrew Barroway and his wife — answered the door. The Athletic does not typically name alleged victims of intimate partner violence without their consent.

According to the affidavit, his wife “appeared to be in distress as she was currently heavily crying, seemed to have been crying for a while, had bruising on her ankles, knees, and blood on her hands.”

Police officers said they interviewed Andrew, his wife and a nanny, who was staying in the adjoining hotel room, the affidavit said. His wife told police that Andrew “strangled her with one hand and put her on the ground in the bathroom and a second time in the kitchen” following an argument Wednesday night before dinner, per the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, Andrew said he and his wife are going through a divorce and engaged in a verbal altercation involving family and finances.

The nanny told police that she heard “glass breaking before dinner” and “arguing after dinner,” per the affidavit. She also said that his wife told her Andrew “hit her,” according to the affidavit.

Police completed a domestic violence report with his wife, which highlighted “several concerning factors including forcing sex, strangulation, recent separation, extreme possessiveness and a history of escalating domestic violence,” per the affidavit. After the investigation, Aspen Police arrested Andrew.

Andrew Barroway and his attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Athletic.

Barroway, 57, became the sole owner of the Coyotes in June 2017. From Dec. 31, 2014, to July 29, 2019, Barroway served as majority owner, chairman and governor of the Coyotes. He sold his majority ownership stake to Alex Meruelo in 2019. Barroway is also the managing partner of the hedge fund Merion Investment Management LP.
