BROSSARD, Que. — A five-year-old boy from a Montreal suburb who was the subject of an Amber Alert on Tuesday was found safe in Ontario later that day, Quebec provincial police said.

The boy was found in York Region, north of Toronto, early Tuesday morning, hours after an alert was issued across the province.

Quebec authorities said the boy was unharmed and will be returned to his family.

They said authorities are questioning the 65-year-old woman alleged to have taken him from Brossard, Que., just south of Montreal. A spokesman said Tuesday an investigation was ongoing and it was too early to say whether the woman would face charges.

The alert was issued around 4 a.m. and said the boy and the woman were travelling in a Tesla 3 with Ontario licence plates.

Ontario Provincial Police were informed about the Amber Alert early on with the assumption the pair were heading to that province. The Amber Alert was extended to Ontario as well.

Police said the boy had been taken about 6 p.m. Monday evening. The all clear was given by police just after 10 a.m. the next day.

An Amber Alert is triggered when a child has been reported abducted and is believed to be in danger.
