Alabama football struggles in shocking upset loss at Oklahoma
Alabama football couldn’t stop the run, and turned the ball over too much on Saturday, in its 24-3 loss at Oklahoma. The defeat likely destroys any hope of the Crimson Tide making a College Football Playoff appearance in Kalen DeBoer’s first season as head coach.
The loss was Alabama’s third in the season, the first time UA has lost more than two in a season since 2010. Afterward, Oklahoma fans stormed the field in Norman.
Here are the highlights from Saturday’s game.
4th quarter15:00-- Alabama faces 3rd-and-2 on the OU 35.
-- Milroe is stuffed on third down. Alabama goes for the fourth down.
-- Touchdown Alabama. Milroe hits Ryan Williams, who makes a circus catch in the end zone. However, Williams is called for illegal touching, and due to the loss of down, OU takes over.
14:07-- Oklahoma takes over on its own 41.
-- Sooners get to Alabama territory but are forced to punt from there.
10:20-- Ryan Williams fields the punt and is tackled at the UA 2-yard line, where the Tide takes over.
9:11--Alabama’s Jalen Milroe exits the game following a sack, Ty Simpson now in the game for Alabama.
6:54--Milroe gets intercepted for a third time in the game. Oklahoma takes possession.
2:00--Two-minute timeout, Oklahoma leads 24-3.
Final--Oklahoma defeats Alabama, 24-3.
3rd quarter15:00-- Alabama receives the opening kickoff, down 10-3. It’s a touchback and UA begins on its own 25.
-- Milroe throws an interception. Eli Bowen picks it off and takes it to the Alabama 14.
14:09-- OU takes over on the Alabama 14.
-- Touchdown Oklahoma. Xavier Robinson scores on a one-yard run. Sooners lead 17-3 after the extra point, with 11:37 left in the quarter.
11:37-- Alabama takes over on its own 25, needing a positive drive to get back in the game.
-- Touchdown Oklahoma. Milroe throws an ugly pick six. Kip Lewis takes it 49 yards to the house for the Sooners, who lead 24-3 after the extra point with 8:05 left in the quarter.
8:05-- Alabama starts again on its own 25.
-- Crimson Tide goes three and out and James Burnip punts.
5:46-- After an excellent Burnip punt, Oklahoma starts on its own 2.
-- Oklahoma gets a first down, but not much more. Sooners line up to punt from their own 17.
2:29-- Alabama takes over on its own 44.
-- End of third.
2nd quarter15:00-- Alabama faces 3rd-and-12 from its own 19.
-- Milroe stuffed on third down. Alabama lines up to punt.
14:12-- OU will begin on its own 38.
-- Sooners drive into Alabama territory. Brenen Thompson is injured for OU.
-- Deontae Lawson is injured for Alabama. He’s helped off the field and heads into the injury tent.
-- OU lines up to try another field goal, this one from 29 yards. It’s good. Oklahoma ties the game at 3-3, with 8:14 left in the second.
8:14-- Alabama will start on its own 25 after the touchback.
-- Another Crimson Tide drive fizzles out in its own territory. UA lines up to punt.
-- Lawson exits the injury tent and heads toward the locker room.
5:51-- After Burnip shanks the punt, Oklahoma takes over on its own 33.
-- Justin Jefferson takes over Lawson’s spot at middle linebacker for Alabama.
-- Oklahoma drives down into Alabama territory. Crimson Tide having real trouble stopping the run.
-- Lawson is ruled out for the rest of Saturday’s game.
-- Touchdown Oklahoma. Xavier Robinson goes 18 yards on a rush for the score. Sooners lead 10-3 after the extra point, with 37 second left in the half.
0:37-- Alabama begins on its own 25.
-- UA takes it to the half. Oklahoma goes to the locker room up 10-3.
1st quarter15:00- Alabama will kick off to Oklahoma. Graham Nicholson lines up for the kick in place of Conor Talty.
-- Oklahoma begins on its own 24 after the return.
-- LT Overton is down with an injury for the Crimson Tide. He walks off the field unassisted, but with a limp.
-- Oklahoma moves the chains once but can’t go much further. OU lines up to punt.
13:03-- Alabama will begin on its own 25.
-- Despite the aid of an Oklahoma offsides penalty, Alabama goes three and out. James Burnip is on to punt.
11:30-- Oklahoma will start out on its own 25 after the punt.
-- Overton is on the sideline with his helmet on for Alabama after briefly entering the injury tent.
-- Xavier Robinson carries the ball 40 yards down to the UA 35.
-- Oklahoma’s Taylor Tatum fumbles. Deontae Lawson recovers for Alabama. Bray Hubbard forced it.
9:41-- Alabama begins on its on 21.
-- Tide faced 3rd-and-16 but Jalen Milroe hits Germie Bernard for a 32-yard gain.
-- Touchdown Alabama. Milroe goes to Ryan Williams, who dances around and turns it into a 41-yard scoring play, but that’s under review.
-- Williams is ruled out of bounds at the 11-yard line.
-- Alabama faces 4th-and-3 from the OU 4, and lines up to go for it, but then Kalen DeBoer takes his first timeout.
-- Graham Nicholson comes out and sets up for a 22-yard field goal attempt. That’s good, and the Crimson Tide takes a 3-0 lead with 3:23 left in the first quarter.
3:23-- Kickoff is a touchback. OU takes over on its own 25.
-- OU marches down to the Alabama 21 on a Jackson Arnold keeper.
-- Sooners draw up a perfect trick play, but drop the pass in the end zone. Then, Zach Schmit misses a 39-yard field goal and UA takes back over.
0:40-- Alabama starts on its own 21.
-- First quarter ends with Alabama up 3-0.
Pregame-- Alabama’s final availability report offers no surprises. Que Robinson, Cole Adams and Keon Sabb are out, and will be for the rest of the season.
-- Alabama wins the coin toss and defers to the second half. Oklahoma will receive the opening kickoff.
