Air Canada has introduced a flexible rebooking policy for travellers who have flights booked around the date of a possible pilot strike next month.

Last week, the Air Line Pilots Association, the union that represents more than 5,400 pilots at Air Canada, announced it has voted to authorize a strike if a deal is not reached with the airline.

So far, Air Canada says there has been “significant progress” made during its negotiations and will continue its talks at the bargaining table during the three-week cooling off period. However, if an agreement is not reached, thousands of pilots could go on strike as of Sept. 17.

“Air Canada’s intention remains to reach a negotiated settlement with its pilots, one that recognizes their professionalism and contributions to the airline,” the airline said in a press release on Tuesday.

As a result, the airline is giving the following options to customers with flights between Sept. 15 to 23. Firstly, customers can rebook on any other Air Canada flight with the same origin and destination up to Nov. 30, 2024. Any change fees or fare difference will also be waived.

Second, travellers can cancel their flight and use the residual value on a future travel credit. Refunds will be available as per fare rules for customers with refundable tickets, however refunds will not be available for those with non-refundable tickets as flights are scheduled to operate as normal.

Lastly, travellers can cancel their flight and rebook travel for after Nov. 30. In this case, change fees are waived but the customer will have to pay the fare difference.

The airline says this policy applies to all Air Canada operated flights, including Air Canada mainline, Air Canada Rouge, Air Canada Express flights operated by Jazz or PAL Airlines, and Air Canada Vacations.
