AEW Full Gear 2024 Venue: Prudential Center (Newark, N.J.) AEW Full Gear 2024 Tickets Distributed: 10,094 AEW Full Gear 2024 Tickets Available: 818 Private Party Wins Fatal 4-WayMax Caster dressed like Macho Man Randy Savage. He went very heelish in his freestyle, ending with “everybody came to see the best wrestler alive!” He then yeeted the microphone so Bowen could get it himself. Another breakup storyline to monitor.
Fans continue to love on The Outrunners, and I don’t blame them one bit.
The Kings of the Black Throne dominated this match to loud cheers. It then occurred to me that there is not one single heel tag team in this match, even among those trying to be heel like Max Caster.
After Caster broke up an Outrunners pinfall, fans chanted “F-U Caster!”
Private Party retained with a Gin and Juice to Max Caster for the win. Caster’s heel turn is nigh.
Tag Team Fatal 4-Way Grade: B MJF Def. Roderick StrongMJF was playing a heel in his hometown, but it didn’t matter. Fans went crazy for MJF. Roderick Strong got no reaction. He then got on the mic and called Strong and the entire crowd white trash.
MJF made a joke about him shooting movies while his mom is shooting his dad.
Fans chanted “he’s our scumbag/no he’s not!” There was also a dueling chant of “let’s go Roddy/MJF!”
As the match got going, the crowd became quieter. AEW really overthought itself by booking Roderick Strong in this match instead of Adam Cole. Fans briefly woke up for an End of Heartache by Strong.
Strong attempted a pinfall on Max, and MJF turned it into a Salt of the Earth for the win.
After the match, MJF pillmanized Strong’s arm with a chair. It was only after this happened when Cole came running down to the ring. This will certainly lead to another breakup.
Kyle O’Reilly shoved Adam Cole after the match, blaming Cole for putting Strong in a situation where he got injured.
MJF vs. Roderick Strong Grade: B- Mercedes Mone Def. Kris StatlanderThe announcement that Mone was from Boston got just as much heat as Mone herself.
Mercedes left Kamille in the back as their possible breakup continues. I surmise Kamille interferes on Mone’s behalf and her injured arm turns out to be a ruse.
Fans chanted “Kris Stat” as Mone dominated the middle portions of the match.
Mercedes connected with an ugly neckbreaker (knee to the back of the neck) on Statlander, and Stat seemed to be okay.
Mone kicked out of a Saturday Night Fever as fans rose to their feet and chanted “this is awesome!”
Mone’s match-long temper tantrum became more intense the more she failed to put Statlander away.
Statlander kicked out of two Backstabbers and a Mone Maker as fans absolutely exploded. An absolute clinic.
Mone bet and punched at Statlander’s knee as Kris went for the Saturday Night Fever. Mone then won with a rollup.
Mercedes Mone vs. Kris Statlander Grade: A- Jay White Def. Hangman Adam PageHangman and Jay White had trouble following Mercedes and Statlander as any match would.
Page targeted the ankle of White, who did a good job making it seem like Page was legitimately twisting his ankle.
As is usual in the heel-free AEW, there were dueling chants of “let’s go Switchblade/Cowboy Shit!”
The story of the match became Hangman and Jay White trying to injure each others’ ankles. At one point, Jay White sold an ankle injury after trying to injure Page’s ankle.
Hangman hit White with two Deadeyes and White kicked out. This after Randy Orton was hospitalized by one piledriver in a far superior story.
White surprisingly won with a Bladerunner out of nowhere. Hangman attacked White after the match. Page then attacked Christopher Daniels.
Hangman Adam Page vs. Jay White Grade: B Kyle Fletcher Def. Will OspreayWill Ospreay walked out dressed in black and was very subdued, even as fans chanted “Ospreay! Ospreay!” Kyle Fletcher, and his generic music, got not reaction.
Fletcher, who wore all white, walked out with a crown. His entrance had everything a great entrance needs, except good music.
Right on cue, Ospreay vs. Fletcher started at 100 MPH. An “F Don Callis” chant broke out throughout Prudential Arena.
There was an impressive sequence where Ospreay and Fletcher exchanged powerbomb counters, only for Ospreay to eventually answer with a Hidden Blade. Fans went wild for the spot. Fletcher also kicked out of the Style Clash and the Hidden Blade as fans chanted “fight forever.”
Ospreay pummeled Fletcher with rabid punches as he struggled to put him away. Excalibur called it frustration. Callis called it jealously.
Fletcher hit a tombstone off the apron onto the steel steps. Ospreay sold his neck injury as his arm was shaking. Fletcher followed up with a Grimstone piledriver as Ospreay kicked out. Of course he did.
Fletcher finally won the spot-filled match with a brainbuster on the top turnbuckle.
Kyle Fletcher vs. Will Ospreay Grade: A Daniel Garcia Def. Jack PerryDuring a champagne celebration, Mariah May attempted to turn on Mina Shirakawa, But Mina literally turned the tables with a spear on May through a table. Mina bled from the mouth and kissed May with her bloody mouth. If this was real blood and that kiss was improvised, that’s incredible.
There was a voice message from Daniel Garcia’s mom that was interpolated in a music video. It didn’t get any reaction whatsoever.
There were CM Punk chants early, but they were booed down before they could really get going.
This match had no business being this good, especially in this spot. The match ended with Daniel Garcia finally winning the TNT Title to a huge pop.
Daniel Garcia vs. Jack Perry Grade: B+ Konosuke Takeshita Def. RicochetThis match struggled to follow a pair of strong matches and a big angle, especially with Full Gear entering its third hour.
Don Callis saved Takeshita from a pinfall, which incited the Prudential Center, leading to the second “F Don Callis” chant of the night. Callis was quietly the MVP of Full Gear.
Ricochet hit his version of the Hidden Blade—The Spirit Gun—for yet another nearfall.
After losing to Takeshita on pay-per-view for one of AEW’s many midcard titles, it’s safe to say Ricochet’s move to AEW was a lateral one. At least to this point.
Ricochet vs. Takeshita Grade: B Bobby Lashley Def. Swerve StricklandSwerve wore a mask of himself on his way to the ring. He had an impressive pyro display.
Jim Ross was in on commentary for the last two matches, starting with the semi-main event.
Fans chanted “we hurt people!” throughout the match.
Shelton Benjamin, but not MVP, was kicked out for excessive interference.
Lashley and Swerve botched a DDT on the apron in a scary spot. Fans gasped, but both men were okay.
Lashley speared Swerve through a barricade, which is a WWE spot that I don’t think has ever been done on AEW PPV. Lashley followed up with a second Spear and a Hurt Lock for the win.
Bobby Lashley vs. Swerve Strickland Grade: B Jon Moxley Def. Orange CassidyOrange Cassidy hit three Orange Punches and a Tope Suicida out the gate, and before Justin Roberts could finish his ring introductions.
Moxley quickly bloodied Cassidy, shades of their previous match. Fans quieted down as Cassidy bled like a stuffed pig.
Moxley bit a bloody Cassidy as fans chanted “you sick F!”
Mox and Cassidy exchanged strikes, which fans weren’t all that into. So Mox put his hands in his pockets and hit his lazy kicks and New Jersey went crazy.
The one flaw of an otherwise good match, was that fans did not buy most of Cassidy’s nearfalls.
The Deathriders interfered, and Jim Ross wisely said Bryce Remsberg should just “throw their ass out.” Thankfully, the Conglomeration evened the odds.
Willow Nightingale interfered to attack Marina Shafir to a huge pop. The first Cassidy pinfall fans fell for was when Cassidy absconded the briefcase and struck Jon Moxley. Wheeler Yuta hit a Busaiku Knee behind the referee’s back as Mox hit a Death Rider for the win.
After the match, Yuta poured disinfectant in Cassidy. Hangman then hit the ring and hit Yuta in the back with a chair. Cage hit the ring and laid out Jon Moxley. Cage attempted to execute the contract. Cage took forever, but Jay White laid Cage out. This led to the Deathriders attacking Jay White.
The overbooking continued as Darby Allin crashed a car into the Deathriders Truck, forcing the Deathriders to commandeer an SUV and retreat.
Jon Moxley vs. Orange Cassidy Grade: B+
