“In the early 1960s, 19-year-old Bob Dylan arrives in New York with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music,” the official synopsis reads. “Forming his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement, making a controversial choice that reverberates worldwide.”
To prepare for his role, where Chalamet lends his vocals in real life, the actor worked with a vocal coach, a guitar instructor, a dialect coach, a movement coach, and a harmonica teacher. The 28-year-old star even wrote out Bob Dylan's lyrics on sheets of paper and taped them to his walls, according to Rolling Stone. “People are deeply protective of Bob Dylan and his music legacy,” Chalamet told the site, “because it’s so pure in a sense, and they don’t want to see a biopic mishandle that.”
A Complete Unknown has received glowing reviews, boasting a 79% critics score and a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times praised it as “one of the best films of 2024,” calling Chalamet’s performance “Oscar-worthy.”
Meanwhile, Emily Zemler from the Observer wrote, “Timothée Chalamet looks, acts, even sings like Bob Dylan in this biopic. But director James Mangold treats Dylan as a mythical figure rather than a person, leaving his mystery intact.”
